Worrying about your stress eating can be almost as consequential as the stress that triggered it in the first place. But you don’t have to fall prey to your stress or your stress eating. The key is knowing what most people miss about stress eating to manage it at the route before it gets the better of you.

Most people who eat in response to stress feel it’s just an unavoidable part of being stressed and overwhelmed and something that they have no control over. But often what they miss is that there is biology involved that drives stress eating.

Being in fight or flight mode sets your nervous system up to produce more cortisol. But finding ways to put yourself in a parasympathetic or rest and digest state can keep cortisol in check.

Cortisol is a stress hormone that can reach unnaturally high levels when you’re stressed. Eating sweet, fatty, and corporate foods calms the cortisol response which is why so many crave these foods when there is stress and overwhelm.

But there are ways to manage the stress and therefore calm the cortisol without food. In my practice, I teach clients ways to do exactly this.
