As we ease into the seasonal change, shedding layers, turning our faces to the sun, I hope you are making time for both adventure and relaxation.
Relaxation allows healing and healthy inner transformation to evolve.
As we transition from the dense root vegetables and heavier cold-weather foods to the lighter and colorful fruits and vegetables of the warmer weather seasons, many of us are still confused as to what to eat.
At a recent annual conference for the Institute for Functional Medicine, a food panel was held where the scope was WHAT’S THE RIGHT DIET? WHAT MAKES A DIET RIGHT?
Dr. Sara Gottfried, author of The Hormone Cure, described the discussion recently in an email I received. I feel it is worth sharing as this is a conversation I often engage in with family, friends and clients.
The panel consisted of several experts in the field of functional medicine and nutrition. What follows are 10 of their “truth bombs”. While some are funny, most are wise.
1. “The Standard American Diet couldn’t be better designed if it was sent here by Al-Qaeda” – Joel Fuhrman, MD, a passionate enthusiast for the NUTRATARIAN DIET
2. “Vegan or vegetarian diets don’t reduce mortality” – Loren Cordain, PhD, who favors the PALEO DIET
3. “If you can wad your bread up into a little ball, throw it away” – Mimi Guameri – MD, who favors the MEDITERRANEAN DIET
4. “There is no single Paleo diet, just like there is no single Mediterranean diet or plant-based diet.” – Loren Cordain
5. “Eat more G-BOMBS: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds.” – Joel Fuhrman
6. “When it comes to the Mediterranean diet, what’s good for the heart is good for the brain.” – Mimi Guameri
7. “You need a diet high in micronutrient density that has optimal hormonal effects.” – Joel Fuhrman
8. “What’s good for the planet is good for your health.” – Mimi Guameri
9. “There are anti-nutrients in vegetarian foods, especially soy and gluten” – Loren Cordain.
10. “The whiter your bread, the sooner you’re dead.” – Joel Fuhrman
I’ve often written you about how the field of nutrition is a minefield of scientific theories. I’d love to hear from you – what resonates with you and what makes you crazy? Send your comments to [email protected] or post them to my Facebook page.
