“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”
– Maya Angelou
Bene Brown, inspirational author and teacher, recently wrote about how our stories, who we were, who we’ve become and why, can be a bridge to understanding but all too often, our attachment to that story keeps us stuck on the bridge, keeping our focus on the past or future rather than paying attention to the present moment.
This applies to all the ways we do life – we’re triggered by any number of situations and how we manage those triggers dictates what makes us feel better or worse. Most of the time, our behaviors, in an effort to manage those triggers, or conditions, are a re-play of thoughts and beliefs that create urges to either control what’s uncontrollable or check us out from what we think we can’t face.
I’ve experienced this in my own life, as for so long I remained steadfastly attached to my story – to a past that had no future. Instead of confronting what I feared would be totally destructive to the present, I engaged in what I thought were self-soothing behaviors. Truth be told, I was headed for total self-destruction.
What does this have to do with a Big Bad Wolf? Remember the bed-time story of Little Red Riding Hood going to visit Grandma? She came upon the big bad wolf on her journey and almost didn’t make it to the loving arms of her beloved Grandma. Have you experienced sharing that story with a beloved child? Did you tell the story so well that she couldn’t sleep or woke up fearing the big, bad wolf? I’m sure you held your precious charge close and assured her there’s no-such-thing…..it’s only a story.
It all changed for me when I took charge…of my health and my belief system. With the support of healers and mentors I learned to re-frame the story I feared and believed was my truth. I stopped searching outside of myself for the solution and slowly learned to connect to the sacred part of my very deep soul that had always been the safest place for me to turn to.
We’ve become a culture that looks outside of ourselves for remedies to our physical and mental wellness. Whether that be Dr. Google, a friend or co-worker touting a dietary theory, or the cookie that we think is going to make us feel more enthusiastic about getting through our afternoon, or the cocktail that helps us to unwind from the day.
Whether it’s a pill, a diet, a shot of sugar, or a shot of tequila, all of these supposed remedies take you further away from YOU. They potentially throw you further off your balance and into the reliance on a crutch or instrument of distraction.
As a functional nutrition and lifestyle practitioner, I’m passionate about seeing and uncovering the web of interactions within each individual ~ within your unique biochemistry and the story that’s defining you.
And I’m committed to helping you understand where balance and that desire for being and living with even keel resides right within you. This allows you to be the main hero on your path, and that’s primarily what I’m after for you.
Believe it or not, you know YOU better than anybody and my goal is always to help you know YOU and love YOU even better, in ways you maybe never even imagined.
