A short time ago I wrote to you about the faulty belief system that plagues many of us who are, or have been at some point in our lives, consumed with dieting and body image. The story we tell ourselves becomes the belief that certain foods are bad, others are good, and our self worth depends on the size of our thighs and/or waistlines. I work with corporate executives, students, busy Moms and homemakers. A common complaint is the thinking that they often overeat . This idea leaves much room for speculation and interpretation. The truth is that not everyone who labels themselves an overeater is one. We have been led to think that an unnaturally small amount of food should be enough. We have allowed ourselves to lose touch with a primal need – hunger, thinking that feeling such signifies a weakness of sorts. The “rules” then kick in; those of willpower, control and discipline.
Then there are those who truly are eating too much and their bodies are confirming this as they experience weight gain, digestive and inflammatory disorders.

If so, know that you are simply stuck in a behavioral pattern that is the result of your story. I was recently reminded that any story which keeps our attention is rife with conflict! (The Big Bad Wolf)
According to experts at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, and my experience confirms this, most fall into one or more of 4 situations –
The Social Overeater – This person has awareness when dining with others that he/she has reached the point of feeling full but keeps eating anyway, continuing to eat because others are or needing to finish all that is on his/her plate.
The Mindless Eater – This person eats on autopilot, maybe while watching television, driving to work or working at the computer. He/she is totally disconnected from his/her body and it’s cues.
The Emotional Overeater – This person uses food to distract from feeling the feelings that are perceived as being too painful and uncomfortable.
The Strong Craving – This creates a situation where the person “just can’t stop”. The pull is unexplainable. Some people in this category describe themselves as having a “big appetite”.
And then what happens?……..
You think the solution is yet another restrictive diet and rounds of punishing exercise.
The situations I just described are just that – situations – not labels for you to judge yourself by. If we label ourselves, we are boxing ourselves into a corner and restricting the space needed to transform our behavior. You can develop a new relationship with food which is pleasurable, without guilt, and learn to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied.
Stop fearing what food will do TO you…
